SEGA creates new addition to popular franchise

Strap on your running shoes and chow down on some chili dogs, because it's time to adventure far beyond Green Hills. Sonic Frontiers is a new game in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise that introduces a new aspect never before seen in the series. The new aspect is an “Open World” mechanic that allows players to freely explore the world, instead of being stuck in a side-scrolling view. The game will be released on Nov. 8 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows for $59.99.

SEGA Corporation is a Japanese gaming company that created and copyrighted Sonic as their leading mascot. They developed the idea of a blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds as a way to gain the upper hand during “The Console Wars of 1993,” against their rivaling company Nintendo, who created their mascot-an Italian plumber by the name of Mario. Many fans of Sega and Nintendo have made media depicting the two companies' mascots, engaging in high-octane battles and skirmishes against one another, that often ended one-sided or a tie.

The game’s main point is for players to play as Sonic the Hedgehog and explore a new land foreign to many Sonic players, both new and old: the mysterious “Starfall Islands.” Throughout his adventure, Sonic must also find his many friends, such as Miles “Tails” Prowler, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose.

The entire soundtrack of the game was designed to be less upbeat and focused on building a mysterious feel for the game. Even some of the more upbeat songs, like “Green Hill,” follow this theme. One of the first pieces to the game’s soundtrack that helps get this point across is its starting song “I’m Here,” created by Merry Kirk-Holmes of “To Octavia.” Another tune for the game is “Vandalize,” created by the Japanese rock band “One Ok Rock” to be the game’s ending number.

Judging from many reviews, many people believe that the game will become a fancier version of Sonic “06, which was a Sonic game released in 2006 and is considered by many to be the worst game in the sonic franchise. If it is as bad as it is reviewed, then there are more games that a player can invest in, such as “Sonic Forces,” “Sonic Mania,” “Sonic Lost World” and many more.
