Tim Burton is known for his dark, mysterious, “burtonesque” gothic style, which is a style he created that is based around his aesthetic that is filled with bright and bold colors. The first big motion picture movie Burton created was “Beetlejuice”, which came out in 1988 and later became one of the best films he has made in his career so far.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which came out in theaters on Sept. 6, is a continuation of the first “Beetlejuice” that came out in 1988. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was a great continuation of the first one because it gives our generation a chance to experience a Burton movie that was popular amongst the older generation. Burton did a great job at having comedy inside of the movie that our generation would understand and like.
People like Burton movies because the elements of his overly exaggerated characters have a blend of his essential edginess style. His overall aesthetic inside of his movies is very unique, and he makes it specifically for people that are known to be goth and emo. Burton is normalizing the strange and unusual so that people who watch his movies have somewhere to fit in. Burton refers to this as “normalizing the outlier,” which is just trying to mainstream people that are like his characters he creates. Burton is known for challenging what is viewed as normal by creating strong anti-narratives to conventional cinematic common beliefs, which is why a lot of people love and adore Burton's movies.
The first “Beetlejuice” is about how when Adam and Barbara died, another couple moved inside their house with a child named Lydia. However, Barbara and Adam do not like the fact that another family moves in and completely changes the whole aesthetic of the house.
Lydia is the only person that can see the couple and speaks to them and ends up having a family relationship with this couple. Adam and Barbara want this family gone, and they get so desperate that they ask the only person for help, and that is a powerful ghost named Beetlejuice. In the end, Adam and Barbara decide they would let them stay in the house because of how much they like Lydia. The first movie ended like this and became a classic for Halloween movies and autumn.
“Tim Burton did an amazing job, and the second one gives an idea of how good the first one was,” Junior Saniah Combs said.
In the new movie, Lydia has a rebellious child who discovers a portal to the afterlife and summons Beetlejuice by saying his name three times. Jenna Ortega is playing this child whose name is Astrid. A lot of fans have been very excited to see Ortega playing yet another Tim Burton character. Ortega is known for other roles that were dark gothic characters, like in “Wednesday,” “Scream” 5 and 6, “Insidious” 1 and 2 and “The Babysitter: Killer Queen.”
“It fits her personality very well since she’s a very dark, nonchalant person,” Junior Brizzeette Robleto said.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” was a great continuation of the first one. It really relates to this generation, of how rebellious some kids are, not listening to certain things and having to overcome certain challenges. What was really enjoyable about this movie was the amazing bright colors and how much viewers can relate to the movie as a teenager and as a parent raising a teenager. The movie was filled with bright colors and solid comedy, and the makeup was identical to the original.
