There has been a new movie taking over theaters since May 10. It will be another movie that takes place in the “Planet of Apes” universe, following the most recent trilogy of “Planet of the Apes” films. This movie is good for people who are interested in the post-apocalyptic genre. If done correctly, this movie will surely be a hit like its predecessors.
Ceasar was, at a young age, smarter than other apes because a drug named ALZ-112 was passed down genetically from his mother who was killed. Caesar grew up learning and adapting to things that happened. He found himself imprisoned with other apes. He then released the same drug that gave him high levels of intelligence and united them, and they rebelled against humanity. While doing so, the Simian flu virus, also known as ALZ-113, spread around the world.
This newest movie takes place 300 years after the trilogy, where Caesar helped to unite the apes against men and the Simian flu virus mutated, killing most humans and turning the ones that survived into primitive animals. In the new movie, many apes formed different clans all over the world. The antagonist of the film, ape leader Proximus Caesar, decides to corrupt Caesar’s teachings in order to enslave the other clans. Proximus is searching for the last remaining bits and pieces of human technology.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” follows a young ape named Noa who is struggling to live up to the expectations set for him. He has been forbidden from learning about what's beyond his village and knows nothing about how humans used to rule the world and were the dominant species. As he embarks on a journey beyond his village, he begins to question everything and everything he has learned. Joining him on his journey will be Mae, a human whom other apes are hunting. She is smarter than the rest of the humans and can speak.
Nine movies came out before the new one, starting with the original movie series: “Planet of the Apes” in 1968, “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” in 1970, “Escape From the Planet of the Apes” in 1971, “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes” in 1972and “Battle for the Planet of the Apes” in 1974. Then the solo film “Planet of the Apes” came out in 2001, followed by the most recent trilogy: “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in 2011, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” in 2014 and “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017.
The trilogy was a massive success in theaters with the first one, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” grossing over $481 million worldwide, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” making $710 million worldwide, and “War for the Planet of the Apes” making $490 million worldwide.
The director is Wes Ball, most known for directing the “Maze Runner” film trilogy. The main character Noa is mostly known for his roles in “It” and “It Chapter Two.” Freya Allan will be playing Mae, and she is most notably known for her role as Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon in “The Witcher.” Raka is being played by Peter Macon, known for his roles in “Shameless” and “The Orville.”
Early reviews of the movie give generally positive ratings, noting the “lovable characters and rich visuals,” according to the Rotten Tomatoes review website. They say Ball brings new fresh life to the franchise as director, while also continuing what fans have always loved about the movies.
