In November 2022, the IHSAA designated boys volleyball as an “emerging sport” in the state of Indiana, starting at only a few dozen schools, according to IndyStar reporting.
Two months later, on January 31, 2023, Warren Central held a callout meeting for their very own boys volleyball team. One of the first people to go was Andru Wright, a junior at the time, who was excited to try out this new sport.
Now a senior, Wright can’t imagine doing anything else. He fell in love with the sport almost immediately when he started playing around a year ago. He loves many aspects of the sport, including the lessons that volleyball can teach a person.
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned from volleyball is that everything moves forward so there’s no time to dwell on the past,” Wright said.
Wright is elated to be playing again this season, but this time as team captain. He is ready to step up his game and be a positive leader and role model for others on his team.
“As a team captain, expectations are higher,” Wright said. “My coaches and team expect me to lead not only physically but also mentally and emotionally.”
Coaches have certainly noticed the leadership values that Wright brings to the table. They recognize how he can motivate others and make a positive impact on the team.
“He always brings a lively energy,” head volleyball coach DaBreonna Doss said. “He works hard and makes sure the other kids work hard.”
Also recognizing these qualities are his teammates, who had nothing but good things to say about Wright. They appreciate everything he does for the team and the skillsets he brings.
“Dru is a great leader,” sophomore Isaac Wilson said. “He always makes sure everyone is on task and encourages everyone to do their best.”
As far as his future in volleyball goes, he does have hopes to play at the next level, and if the opportunity presents itself, he is excited to have the opportunity to continue playing. He plans to reach this goal by continuing his hard work and playing to the best of his ability.
“My personal goal for volleyball is to become one of the best hitters in the state and continue my volleyball career in college,” Wright said.
One thing is for sure, Wright wants to make a name for himself. His family, friends, coaches and teammates are all excited to see what he can do for the rest of this year and in the future. His teammates believe there would not be anybody better to lead them this season.
“Dru is definitely a good leader, he makes sure we know what we’re doing and how to do it,” sophomore Jack Basham said. “Out of everyone on the court, he’s the one you’re gonna be hearing the most.”
