The Owlies are the opinions of the Journalism program of who should win an Oscar, one of the highest awards given to film projects. The live Oscars will air on March 10.
Actor in a leading role- Cillian Murphy
The movie “Oppenheimer” is about a physicist named Robert Oppenheimer who was appointed to work on the Manhattan Project, which was the development and design of the world's first atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy should win this award for how masterfully he played his role as Robert Oppenheimer. The way he characterizes this historical event is almost as if he was there during that time, which is why he deservingly wins the Owlie.
Actress in a leading role- Emma Stone
“Poor Things” is about Bella Baxter, who is a young woman in London, whom a scientist resurrects after she dies due to suicide. She goes on a journey to find herself throughout life. Emma Stone plays Bella Baxter, and she excels at this role mostly due to her truly showing the progression of the character throughout the entirety of the movie. That is why she is deserving of the Owlie.
Animated feature Film-SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE
The story follows Miles Morales as Spiderman, as he goes across the multiverse with Gwen Stacy. In the multiverse, they meet a team of Spider-People led by Spiderman 2099. There is a new conflict when a villain named the Spot causes chaos throughout the multiverse. The reason this movie wins the Owlie is due to the diverse character design and the amazing storyline. It is also filled with tons of action-packed scenes, and the music used for the movie is incredible.
Visual Effects- GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3
This story, the third in its series based on the Marvel comics, takes place after Gamora loses her memory from the past few years, which causes Peter Quill to fall into a deep depression. They get attacked by Adam Warlock, who is a warrior created by High Priestess Ayesha, as he seeks to destroy the guardians for stealing Gamora. The aspect of the visual effects that stands out the most is how aesthetically pleasing the different planets, ships and characters look in the movie. That is the reason why this movie deserves an Owlie.
Actor in Supporting role-RYAN GOSLING
The “Barbie” Movie is about famous dolls Barbie and Ken having the times of their lives as they live in a perfect world. When they are dropped into the real world, they discover the reality of living amongst humans. Ryan Gosling’s role as Ken is a perfect cast for the character, as he complements Barbie with his comedic presence. That is why he is worthy of an Owlie.
Actress in supporting role-DANIELLE BROOKS
“The Color Purple” musical is about Celie, who has been torn apart from her sister and children due to this she faces many challenges in her life. She gets support from a sultry singer named Shug Avery and her stepdaughter, and with this, they build an unbreakable bond of sisterhood. Danielle Brooks plays the role of Sofia, and in this role, she encapsulates the impact of having someone in your corner through thick and thin. That, plus her killer vocals in the film, earns her an Owlie.
