The number two ranked girls track team has been paving a path of glory throughout their outdoor season ahead of their championship season.

“We definitely have a target on our backs, but as a team, we have a lot of talent across the board,” junior Taylor Thomas said.

After winning both indoor MIC and indoor state, the ladies came into the outdoor season ranked first among the IHSAA teams by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.

The Lady Warriors got to work early in the outdoor season, with two victories during the first week back from spring break, when they defeated the Lawrence North Wildcats in a dual meet and traveled down to Jeffersonville for the Red Devil Classic.

“Any time you can perform well, it’ll give you some confidence moving forward,” head distance coach Brian MIller said. “It was a good jumping off point and confidence boost.”

It took a full team effort to win the Red Devil Classic, as the team scored in every category they could: distance, sprints and field events, including eight event champions.

“We were all able to make a positive contribution toward victory,” senior Marietta Williams said. “Every point mattered and we went out and competed.”

The team suffered their first and only loss of the season to this point at the Hamilton Relays, where they got second to the then number two team in the state, Hamilton Southeastern Royals.

The Lady Warriors got back to their winning ways with an away win over the 18th ranked Carmel Greyhounds on April 16. With the win, the team finished their varsity dual meets with an undefeated record.

The team is not letting their success hinder their intensity at practice, as even with all of their wins, they are not settling for what they have done so far and are looking at the bigger picture.

“We’re still giving 100 percent at practice,” Williams said. “Like our coach says, we can’t ‘just do it’ we have to work for it.”

Williams has been helping the team all season on the distance side of things, along with junior Elisabeth Moss. The Lady Warriors show up every day to practice to put in the work to help their team succeed.

While the girls distance team is impressive, they also have a historically great sprinting and jumping squad. The ladies have top five leaders in multiple events like the 400 meter dash, 400 meter relay, 1600 meter relay, and long jump. Senior Prommyse leads them all with a national top five performance in the long jump.

Tonight, the ladies look to put their home winning streak to the test as they will host five of the top 20 teams in the state at the MIC championship meet.

“It’ll be competitive,” Miller said. “It’ll be tough to win but everyone just has to bring their best performances.”
