Nelson of Loveland, CO, creates his own newspaper and donates 100 percent of the proceeds to food banks throughout his state. Nelson charges $5 each month for a subscription and has generated $4,000 to donate.

THUMBS UP TO Apple celebrating Black History Month. Apple is bringing a variety of collections to many of its apps in order to bring appreciation to and amplify Black creators, developers, businesses, and artists. Apple has added updated contents to the App Store, Apple TV, Apple Music, and even Apple Maps.

THUMBS UP TO Peloton’s recent release of apparel inspired by Black History Month. The at-home fitness company is raising its efforts to support Black businesses by releasing a clothing collection that highlights the stories and work of Black creators that they are in collaboration with. Outside of this partnership, Peloton invested $100,000 into The Steve Fund, which is a non-profit organization that focuses on mental health for people of color in the United States.

THUMBS UP TO President Joe Biden signing executive orders to modernize the immigration system. Biden highly prioritizes bettering the immigration system, believing it is the right of immigrants to come into the country. The Biden administration also hopes to modernize the system by urging officials to use “noncitizen” instead of “illegal alien” when referring to immigrants.

THUMBS UP TO Facebook adding new tools to fight online child exploitation. The Facebook team said that they would be stepping up their fight against child abuse with new tools for spotting innappropriate content and stricter guidelines.

THUMBS DOWN TO Uncle Bill’s Pet Center on W. 38th St catching fire. No people were harmed, however the store catching fire caused an estimated 100 animals to perish from smoke inhalation. Multiple reptiles, fish, an office cat, and a guinea pig were able to survive, and were removed and evaluated by an Uncle Bill’s veterinarian. The cause of the fire is unknown but is under investigation by the Indianapolis Fire Department.

THUMBS DOWN TO Super Bowl LV’s poor COVID-19 precautions. The Super Bowl held in the Raymond James Stadium was intended to seat only 20 percent of its mass capacity, going from 65,890 to 13,200 fans. Fans were to be wearing masks and seated in pods that were six feet apart. However, the stadium accompanied 25,000 fans, many of whom were not wearing their masks correctly or properly socially distanced.

THUMBS DOWN TO Putting Gorilla Glue in hair becoming a trend. In January, Louisiana resident Tessica Brown put Gorilla Glue in her hair to style it, and garnered many views on TikTok and donations of GoFundMe after sharing her story. After many failed attempts and a trip to the emergency room to remove it, plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Obeng was able to remove it. However, TikToker Avani Reyes followed in her footsteps, spraying Gorilla Glue spray in her hair, posting about it on TikTok, and sharing her GoFundMe.

THUMBS DOWN TO the fact that millions of people throughout the United States are without power. States such as Texas, Oregon, Louisiana, West Virginia, and Kentucky have been hit hard by the snow storms sweeping the United States, leaving millions without power in Texas alone. Over 160,000 in Oregon and tens of thousands in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Louisiana are without power.
